***** Obituary (Maryborough Standard Newspaper; 6 October 1899):
DEATH OF MR. F. FRICKE _________
ANOTHER OLD RESIDENT GONE
By the death of Mr. Frederick Fricke, of Park Farm, Carisbrook, which took place yesterday evening, after a very short illness of conjestion of the lungs, the district loses one of its earliest and most respected inhabitants. He with his brother, who had predeceased him, arrived in the colony from Hanover, Germany, in 1854 and almost immediately settled in this district, where he has resided continuously until the time of his demise, having for 45 years resided in the same house. The gold fever being on at the time of his arrival here, his shrewd intelligence induced him to see that the cultivation of agrucultural products was likely to prove a remunerative and substantial undertaking.. He accordingly turned his attention to the growth of farm produce, with considerable advantage to himself. Taking a keen interest in all matters relating to dairying and agricultural industries, he was a member of the committee of the Maryborough District Agricultural society, and only a few days ago represented the Society at the farmers Conference held in Melbourne on connection with the question of reduction of grain freights and other matters of rural importance to farmers of the colony. He also had been a member of the old Carisbrook Agricultural Society. From his lengthy association with the early history of the colony, it is naturally to be expected that many incidents of interest have been participated in by him. Not the least important of these from a fruitgrower's standpoint was his connection with the naming of the Bismark apple. One day he picked up on the diggings of an apple core which he took home and planted. The seedling which grew was never grafted but it produced a magnificent apple, which in honour of the late Prince Bismark was given the name under which it is now known. From this was produced an apple which by subsequent careful cultivation has been brought to its present excellence. A splendid example of the fruit may noe be seen in the Museum at Melbourne. Mr Fricke's name being attached to it. Mr Fricke also devoted attention to municipal matters, and for many years was a member of the Carisbrook Borough Council, having occupied the Mayoral chair. During his illness he was attended by Drs. Haley and Duiyan. He leaves a wife and grown up family, well provided for. The funeral will take place tomorrow (Friday) afternoon, moving from his late residence at half past three o'clock, for the Carisbrook Cemetery
