Eliza, who was named after her mother, was the daughter of George Howell and his wife Eliza (nee Jones). She was also the second daughter in the family given the name Eliza, the first one was born in July 1836 but died the following February. Eliza, was born between 1845-1846 in West Dean, thought to be Lane End, Coleford. Nothing is known of her early life until, at the age of 20, (1886) she chose to emigrate to Victoria, Australia on the "Palm Tree" with Harriett Bosley and her younger brother George. (George and Harriett were cousins of Edward Aston, the husband of Eliza's older sister Annie.)
Eliza has proven to be the most enigmatic of the Australian lines. Upon arriving in Victoria, Eliza, Harriett and George made their way to Carisbrook where Eliza's sister Annie was living with her growing family. Two years later Eliza gave birth to her first child Rosa Sophia at Carisbrook, son Benjamin followed in 1870 and finally Annie Jane in 1873. All three children were baptised as Howells and there is no evidence that Eliza ever married. The choice of the name Annie suggests that she was close to her older sister Annie. An Elizabeth Howell was listed as a midwife for Richard Whear at Carisbrook on 2 May 1889.
In the local hospital records Eliza is shown as being admitted on 25 February 1905, age 59. She was single and of the Wesleyan faith.
In 1909 she was living at McNeil Street, Carisbrook with her two youngest children, Benjamin and Annie.
Eliza died on 14 August 1915 of acute cholecysitis (gall bladder infection) and exhaustion. Her address at the time was McNiel Street, Carisbrook, with her son Benjamin was the witness on the death certificate. She was buried in the Methodist section of Carisbrook Cemetery and there is no headstone for her.
